This large-format book describes the successful 1980 Sino-Japanese Everest expedition which ascended the mountain via two routes from a base on the Rongbuk Glacier. Two climbers made what is considered the first full ascent of the North Face, via the Hornbein Couloir and then the rocks of the upper West Ridge. A second team ascended the Northeast Ridge route with Yasuo Kato, ultimately, ascending alone. He and another climber had to bivouac on the descent, without oxygen, near the Second Step. In Japanese, with 2-page English summary. Yak j532 (2nd ed)
