Amundsen served as first mate on Adrian de Gerlache’s Belgian Antarctic Expedition (1897-99) in the ship “Belgica”. Although previous scientific work was conducted in Antarctic waters this was the first voyage of scientific vessel to the Antarctic continent. Frederick Cook was the expedition surgeon and was highly praised by Amundsen while the “Belgica”, trapped in the ice, drifted for 13 months. This is the first English translation of Amundsen's previously unpublished diary which was written for his personal use.
