Jeffers was a librarian for the New York Public Library as well as librarian for the American Alpine Club. He formed the Bureau of Associated Mountaineering Clubs of North America in 1916 and was regarded as one of the best mountaineers in North America. In 1919 he made a solo first ascent of the north (lower) peak of Mount Moran in the then little known Teton range.
