Greely's Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (1881-84) was based at Fort Conger, Lady Franklin Bay, Ellesmere Island. They explored the north coast of Greenland from Cape Bryant to Cape Washington, the interior and west coast of Grinnell Land, and extended the mapping of Hayes Sound. When relief ships failed to reach them, they marched out of the Hall Basin area, all but six died before being rescued by Schley at Cape Sabine, Smith Sound.
