Shackleton’s British Antarctic Expedition (1907-09) achieved many firsts - a new furthest south (88º 23’), first to the South Magnetic Pole, and the first ascent of Mount Erebus (12,448’). The expedition is also noted for producing three wonderful, deluxe, limited-edition, books – Antarctic Days (280 copies), Aurora Australis (80 copies), and The Heart of the Antarctic (300 copies). This is the trade edition of Shackleton’s classic book.
Presented here is Shackleton’s diary of the Southern Journey, an account of the Western Journey, T. W. Edgeworth David’s account of the Northern Journey toward the South Magnetic Pole, the ascent of Mount Erebus, a long introduction by Hugh Robert Mill on the last 100 years of Antarctic exploration, and much more. The 12 color plates are by George Marston. A nice, clean set.
