Kurt Diemberger took this amazing shot of the Hillary Step during his ascent as a member of the 1978 French Everest Expedition. In the foreground is Pierre Mazeaud, leader of the expedition, starting up the step. One of the unique aspects of this photo is the view across the cornice-threatened upper Kangshung Face to the actual summit, where Jean Afanassieff and Nicolas Jaeger can be seen standing. Kurt is one of the world's foremost mountaineers, being one of only two people to make first ascents of two 8000-metre peaks - Broad Peak, with Hermann Buhl, and Dhaulagiri.
