Freshfield was a member of the privileged class and thus was able to devote his life to mountain exploration and the promotion of geographical study, starting in 1863 with his record of being the youngest schoolboy to scale Mont Blanc. His three expeditions to the unknown Caucasus and to the unmapped region north of Kangchenjunga gave rise to some of the most vivid and exciting writings of mountain literature.
