A remarkable autobiography by one of the leading Italian mountaineers of the 1930's, Guisto Gervasutti (1909-1946) made the first ascents of some of the finest routes in the Western Alps: the Right Freney Pillar; the South Face of Pointe Gugliermina; the East Face of the Grandes Jorasses, and major routes on L'Olan and Ailefroide in the Dauphine. In addition, he was involved in many other dramatic climbs including the second ascent of the North Face of the Grandes Jorasses in a storm, just two days after the first ascent by Peters and Meier.
