In 1970 Reinhold and his brother Gunther joined an expedition led by Karl Herrligkoffer to attempt the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat. The tragic outcome of that expedition ended up in the courts, as had other Herrligkoffer-led expeditions. Messner’s original account of this expedition ‘Die Rote Rakete’ is very difficult to find as virtually all copies were ordered destroyed due to litigation. Here at last is his story.
