Brown’s book chronicles the lives of inspiring women who not only followed in the footsteps of their male counterparts in the early days of mountaineering, but often surpassed them. Women such as Maria Paradis, Henriette d’Angeville, Lucy Walker, Meta Brevoort, Elizabeth Le Blond, Annie Smith Peck, Fanny Workman, Dora Keen and Miriam Underhill ignored convention and criticism to become accomplished outdoorswomen whose mountaineering feats are as extraordinary today as they were at the turn of the century. This won a National Outdoor Book Award Honorable Mention.
