This novel takes place in wartime Montenegro. It describes the experiences of a young man on the run who has been cut off from the main body of his fellows. At first with two companions, later quite alone, Lado roams the mountains and valleys of an area dominated by Chetniks and torn by family feuds, hiding when he must, making sudden forays in quest of food or clothing, falling in love with a woman whose own husband is a prisoner far from home, retaliating with mounting savagery against the enemies who pursue him. Translated from Serbo-Croatian and winner of Yugoslavia's highest literary award. Not in Neate.
