In 2003, Hadow became the first to journey solo to the pole without resupply from Ward Hunt Island. Six months later he reached the South Pole, thus becoming the first Briton to walk to both Poles. While the journey to the North Pole is shorter than that to the South Pole, one has to contend with the potential for open water leads and prowling polar bears.
