Bob Bates (1911-2007) was a mountaineer, author, teacher, and member of the Harvard Five; which included Ad Carter, Charles Houston, Terris Moore, and Brad Washburn. Lucania (1937) with Washburn, the reconnaissance and attempt on K2 (1938, 1953) with Bob Craig, Charles Houston, and Dee Molenaar, the first ascents of Mount Wood and Mount Walsh (1941), the third ascent of McKinley (1942) with Washburn, Operation Muskox NW Territories (1946), the first ascents of Mt Hubbard and Mt Alverstone (1951), Ojos del Salado, Chile (1956), Mt Russell (1966), Mt Ararat (1970), the first ascent of Ulugh Muztagh (1985) with Nick Clinch and Tom Hornbein, and more. This book is a must read, with maps and sketches by Dee Molenaar.
