On June 9, 1957, four Austrians – Hermann Buhl, Kurt Diemberger, Marcus Schmuck, and Fritz Wintersteller – made the historic first ascent of Broad Peak (8047m). Three weeks later, Buhl was killed on nearby Chogolisa (7000m). In 2006, Hemmleb and nine companions went to the Baltoro region to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Broad Peak and the death of Buhl by attempting ascents and ski descents of both peaks. Hemmleb, well known for his historical work on the disappearance of Mallory and Irvine on Everest, interweaves the story of the 1957 first ascent with the dramatic, and tragic, events of 2006. Controversy has recently enveloped the history of the 1957 ascent with the team divided between Buhl/Diemberger and Schmuck/Wintersteller camps. Hemmleb tries to present a balanced view of the expedition, however, Wintersteller has refused to sign this book and it was prevented from being sold at the 2007 50th anniversary celebration in Salzburg. In German, no English translation.
