The account of the first, and second, ascent of the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere. Fitzgerald had accompanied Sir Martin Conway on his tour of the Alps and led an expedition to attempt New Zealand’s Mt. Cook. On this large expedition he himself failed to reach the summit, and never climbed again, although his guide Matthias Zurbriggen and two other members did so. The appendices cover the natural history of the region. An important work on the Andes.
