Buhl is considered to be one of the top climbers of all time. He was the first to make the first ascents of two 8000m peaks, Broad Peak and Nanga Parbat. His solo ascent of Nanga Parbat, from the final camp, ranks as one of the outstanding feats in climbing history. This autobiography, published prior to his death in 1957, covers his early climbs culminating with Nanga Parbat. Following the ascent of Broad Peak he attempted Chogolisa, with Kurt Diemberger, but disappeared when he fell through a cornice.
