English climber Eckenstein (1859-1921) was an early advocate of bouldering and strongly influenced both crampon and ice-axe design. His first ascent in the Alps was in 1886 and in 1887 he made several first ascents there with Mathias Zurbriggen. In 1892 he joined William Martin Conway on his expedition to the Karakoram but, due to conflicts with Conway, he withdrew after six months. This is his diary from that expedition. He was also a close friend of Aleister Crowley and, in 1902, he returned to the Karakoram with Crowley on their expedition to make the first attempt on K2, reaching 21,400’. The original edition of this book ‘The Karakorams and Kashmir: An Account of a Journey’ (1896) is quite scarce.
