A wonderful, large-format, treasure-trove of photos, some never reproduced before in book form, from the two greatest Antarctic expeditions. The amazing photos taken by Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley, during Scott’s British Antarctic Expedition (1910-13) and Shackleton’s Imperial Transantarctic Expedition (1914-17), have never ceased to inspire. This uses narrative drawn from Ponting’s and Hurley’s writings to provide background to the photos. There is also a nice presentation of non-photographic material from the expeditions as well as appendices on the photographic process.
