Hooper uses diaries, journals and letters held at Scott Polar Research Institute and the Mawson Archives to the tell the often overlooked story of Captain Scott’s six-man Northern (Eastern) Party which was charged with exploring the coast of King Edward VII Land. They spent over a year in the field but when the relief ship Terra Nova failed to appear they were forced to endure a second Antarctic winter. They eventually walked 450 miles back to their base only to learn of the loss of Scott and his companions. A tremendous survival story. This is a thorough and well-researched account.
