The first book to examine the history and role of polar exploration photography, ‘Face to Face’ is a unique project of breathtaking quality. It features the very first polar photographs, the first portraits of explorers, some of the earliest photographs of the Inuit, and rare images from many of the Heroic-Age Antarctic expeditions. Focusing on portraiture, 50 images have been selected from the extensive collections of the Scott Polar Research Institute. This archive includes daguerreotypes, magic lantern slides, glass plate negatives and images from private albums. Some of these have been rediscovered during the research for this book and have never been before the public eye. Alongside these portraits are 50 modern-day images by leading expedition photographer Martin Hartley, who has captured men and women of many nations, exploring, working, and living in the polar regions today. With a foreword written by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, two essays examining polar photography ‘then’ and ‘now’ by polar historian and curator of art at SPRI, Dr Huw Lewis-Jones; and an afterword by Hugh Brody. This is a companion volume to Mountain Heroes: Portraits of Adventure (#25960). This lavishly-illustrated book weighs 3.5 pounds.
