Confortola had summited five 8000m peaks by the time he faced K2 in 2008. He successfully reached the top of K2 as well but then found himself trapped high on the mountain, with Gerard McDonnell, as tragedy unfolded around them. Confortola survived K2, McDonnell did not, but lost all of his toes in the process. Following rehabilitation he returned to the mountains and in 2010 attempted Lhotse, reaching 7991m before cold feet turned him back. This is Confortola’s second book.
