This ‘classic view’ of Everest was taken by Webster partway up Cholatse (21,400’) in Nepal’s Khumbu region during a 1993 alpine-style, 2-man ascent of Cholats’e West Rib. Everest’s North and Northeast Ridges and George Mallory’s route up the mountain in Tibet are on the left skyline. Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld’s West Ridge slants up and right just above the photograph’s center. Below the summit is the massive Southwest Face, climbed by Chris Bonington’s team, and the right-hand skyline is the upper Southeast Ridge, ascended by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The serrated ridge-like summit to the right and much lower than Everest is Nuptse.

Ed Webster, author, climber, lecturer, has seen Everest from all sides as a member of three very different teams – an attempt on the West Ridge Direct (1985) as part of a 20-member team, a solo ascent of Everest’s North Peak - Changtse (1986), and the audacious ascent of the Kangshung Face (1988) with a team of four. We are pleased to offer his terrific posters depicting all sides of the mountain.
