The imposing North Face of the Grandes Jorasses is considered one of the finest in the Alps. The classic route, the Walker Spur, was first climbed by Riccardo Cassin, Gino Esposito, and Ugo Tizzoni (1938). Walter Bonatti made the fourth ascent, with three others (1949), as well as the first winter ascent with Cosimo Zappelli (1963). Alessandro Gogna made the first solo ascent (1968). Frendo presents a history of the North Face with much on his 1945 ascent, the third ascent, with Gaston Rebuffat. In French, no English translation.
