In preparation for this elegantly rendered farewell, award-winning photographer and writer Tim Palmer spent the spring, summer, and autumn of 2010 among California's last glaciers. He climbed and slept in a world of creaking ice and snow, a world sharp with light and cold, photographing the remnants of the mighty forces that for millennia have shaped our mountains and valleys and replenished our lakes, rivers, and streams. Through Palmer's words and photographs, we encounter both the raw power and beauty of these luminous icescapes and the irreversible effects of climate change. This is an elegiac tribute to a fading terrain we should never forget.
