Alpinist is a superb archival-quality, quarterly publication dedicated to world alpinism and adventure climbing. It has been called by Reinhold Messner ‘The best climbing magazine in the world today". Issues include a Mountain Profile section covering the history of a particular peak, Letters, Climbing Notes, and additional feature articles about unique climbs. What sets Alpinist apart from other climbing magazines is the prodigious use of full-page color photos and minimal advertising. Alpinist has won several awards – a Maggie Award for Best Quarterly/Consumer Division in 2004 (Winter 2003–2004 Issue 5), Print Magazine's 2004 Regional Design Award for the cover of Spring 2004 Issue 6, and a Maggie Award for Best Overall Design/Consumer Category in 2005 (Autumn 2004 Issue 8). In December, 2007 a disastrous fire destroyed Alpinist’s Illinois fulfillment center. Gone were back issues and merchandise including hats, shirts, water bottles, stickers and coffee mugs.
Alpinist is a collectible item which, like Alpinism, Ascent, Mountain Review, Mountain World, North American Climber, Polar Circus, Vulgarian Digest, and others, doesn’t take up too much shelf space, or weight.
