Matthews was a member of the scientific staff on the Discovery expedition of 1924-27. This is the standard account of South Georgia’s history, prior to Headland’s ‘Island of South Georgia’. Matthews provides a general description of the island, details of early voyages, the sealers, 19th century voyages, and the whaling industry in the early 20th century. Very scarce.
