In the fall of 1999, photographer Hauf embarked on his first Himalayan trek, the challenging Solu-Khumbu trail. Starting in the village of Jiri, in the foothills of Nepal, he hiked with a small party east and north to the high-altitude village of Namche, gateway to Sagarmatha National Park and Everest Base Camp. In addition to the photographs he took, he kept a journal detailing the events and moods, high and low, he experienced along the way.
