Whymper (1840-1911) was a leading English mountaineer, explorer, illustrator, and author who was obsessed with being the first to climb the Matterhorn. In this mountaineering classic he recounts details of his early climbs and accounts of early attempts on the Matterhorn, culminating in his successful, and tragic, first ascent in 1865. “It is the mountaineering book which most nearly fulfills the quality of epic… Even without the tragedy, which raises it epically to even greater heights, it is incomparable” - Neate.
