Hobbs was a geologist who wrote a major work on glaciers (Characterstics of Existing Glaciers) as well as this selection of biographies of principal Antarctic explorers. Included here are biographies of Palmer, Wilkes, Scott, Shackleton, David, Priestley, Amundsen, Nordenskjöld, von Drygalski, Charcot, Mawson, Byrd, and Ellsworth. Each chapter includes references on the subject person. Most of the portrait photos are from copies signed or inscribed to Hobbs. Copies such as this, without eight photos, are considered remainder copies; nonetheless, the book is rather uncommon.
