When Bradford read David Day’s contentious and provocative book ‘Flaws in the Ice’ (2013) she was somewhat incensed at the conclusions Day had reached about one of the Heroic Age’s foremost explorers, the Australian, Douglas Mawson. The negative picture Day presented was so much at odds with what she had thought from her previous extensive reading about Mawson that she decided to write this essay to analyse some of the most damning criticisms Day makes and to present a contrasting point of view based on evidence from many sources. Introduction by Beau Riffenburgh.
