Passel (1915-2002) served as a geologist on Admiral Byrd’s US Antarctic Service expedition (1939-41) at West Base and participated in the Geological Party’s 83-day traverse to Marie Byrd Land. His extensive diaries have appeared in several variants. They were first published in softcover in an edited and expurgated form in 1984 by the US Antarctic Service. Desiring a more complete publication, Passel published a limited edition in two forms in 1992; one signed printing of 40 copies quarter-bound in pigskin in a clamshell presentation box and one unsigned printing of 250 copies quarter-bound in cloth. The copy offered here is a signed copy of the 250 edition. In 1995 a trade hardcover edition with dust jacket was published with the title ‘Ice: The Antarctic Diary of Charles F. Passel’. Uncommon.
