“The ingenious authors have collected and arranged, with great industry and perspicuity, the materials furnished by their predecessors, and by a careful and diligent examination of the different roads across the Alps, performed in the course of a tour undertaken with an exclusive reference to this inquiry, have been enabled to give to their comments on Polybius a greater degree of interest, and to stamp on their observations a higher authority than they could possibly have possessed, had they, like many of their predecessors, especially Letlonne, St. Simon, and Whitaker, possessed no other guide than their map and compasses” - Edinburgh Review (1828). The bookplate is of noted Boston architect Alexander Parris (1780-1852).
