This is the first publication of Amundsen’s complete diary of the Gjøa expedition which made the first crossing of Canada’s Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is also the most complete collection of images from the expedition published in one book.

Over the course of three years, the small 45-ton fishing vessel Gjøa, with a crew of only six, worked its way westward spending three winters locked in the ice. Amundsen learned much from the local Inuit, including the use of sled dogs and to wear animal skins for clothing. He would later put these skills to use in the Antarctic. An important publication.
