Messner recounts Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-17) focusing on Frank Wild. Wild, one of the greatest British Edwardian Polar explorers of all time, participated in five Antarctic expeditions, serving with Scott, Shackleton, and Mawson, on five different ships. In 1914, Wild, together with Shackleton and 26 men set out on the ‘final trip on earth’ - to cross the Antarctic continent. Their ship ‘Endurance’ was destroyed by pack ice and the men ultimately ended up on Elephant Island. As Shackleton set out to South Georgia to seek help, 22 men remained under Wild’s leadership, in constant darkness and freezing cold. Through his personality alone, Wild maintained the confidence of his men in rescue during four months of Antarctic winter. It's the true story about the wilderness and what makes us survive in it. A small book which would be nice in an English edition. In German, no English translation.
