From the origins of mountaineering to the last virtuosos of the summits, Modica addresses in this collection of chronicles all aspects of mountaineering and its various practices. From the invention of the bivouac to the progressive control of vertigo at the end of the 19th century, the author crosses the Alps with great curiosity and meets the fate of characters who have definitively converted to their passion. He presents a gallery of portraits celebrating Ruskin, Töpffer, Cordier, Brevoort, Zurbriggen, Lunn, Dibona, Piaz, Solleder, Comici, Lambert, Harlin, Maestri, Barbier, and others.
Modica was one of the most brilliant mountaineers of his generation in the years 1970-1980. When he hung up the ice ax to pick up the pen, he quickly proved to have just as much aptitude for both disciplines. His columns for Montagnes Magazine have been followed for almost twenty years by all mountain and history enthusiasts. He is the author, published by Guérin, of the reference work ‘Les Grandes Premiers du Mont-Blanc’, published in 2011.
