A note on Michael Spender – Spender was a contemporary of both Shipton and Tilman. He created the first detailed photogrammetric map of Everest while serving as the chief surveyor on Shipton’s Everest reconnaissance expedition of 1935. Photogrammetric techniques use overlapping aerial images to provide 3D images and precise measurements for map making. The expedition used two open-cockpit biplanes with Spender taking 1200 images of the Everest area.
