An original, large-format, press photo from the Byrd Antarctic Expedition (1928-30). This image depicts a Finback whale broaching the surface to breathe near the expedition’s base camp in the Bay of Whales. In the background is a photographer and tripod. This image is taken from the Paramount Picture movie filmed during the expedition titled ‘With Byrd at the South Pole’. There also exists several similar photos; one which shows two whales and more people and one which shows this whale from the photographer’s perspective. Uncommon.
