Pirie (1878-1965), a medical doctor, philatelist, orchid-grower, and bacteriologist, was also a member of William Speirs Bruce’s Scottish National Antarctic Expedition of 1902-4, acting as both surgeon and geologist. He co-authored the official narrative of the expedition. As a noted philatelist, specializing in the polar regions, he first published this monograph in 1949, in serial form in Stamp Collecting magazine. This unique publication covers the early philatelic history of Tristan da Cunha, Gough Island and the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition, Bouvet Island, Kerguelen, Marion Island, the Antarctic Continent, Heard Island, Auckland Island, the Mawson, Scott, Shackleton, Byrd, Shirase, and Filchner expeditions, Tierra del Fuego, Falkland Island Dependencies, South Shetlands, Graham Land, South Orkneys, and South Georgia.
