An influential member of the Alpine Club, Young made many first ascents in the Alps prior to WW1. After the war, and loss of a leg, he continued his mountaineering. Hankinson’s book relies heavily on Young's writings and won the 1995 Boardman-Tasker Award for Mountaineering Literature.
