Brad Washburn's aerial photographs are legendary for their detail and simplicity. This great photograph, taken in 1958, depicts the summit of the Matterhorn and is the image used on the cover of the book 'Bradford Washburn: Mountain Photography'.
Brad Washburn was one of the leading mountain photographers in the world. In 1927, he began exploring the world of aerial photography, turning his camera on Mont Blanc, while on a family trip to the Alps. An accomplished mountaineer, scientist, author, and explorer as well, his work sets a standard against which all other mountain photographers are measured. Although Washburn had strictly documentary and scientific intentions for his photography, he captured a considerable artistic component of his subjects. Washburn's photographs contain all the imagery and symbolism associated with mountains, alongside the realism and factual renderings expected of a scientist, combined in a collection of images that define the state of the art. His work has a visual impact that holds a viewer's attention as no other mountain photographer's work can do.
